Title:  Database Engineering Manager

This role sits within the Database Team, part of the Infrastructure & Cloud Department within IT. The team is responsible for building, managing and optimising the organisation’s core infrastructure technologies. 

With more than 50 specialised engineers and technical experts, the department provides the expertise required to support the organisation’s technology landscape. This position plays a critical role in managing and shaping our database platforms and technologies.

As Database Engineering Manager, you’ll provide technical leadership and strategic direction to a team responsible for building, operating and continuously improving our enterprise database and data platforms, pipelines and services. 

Reporting to the Head of Infrastructure, you’ll play a key role in ensuring our data services are secure, scalable, reliable and high-performing. You’ll establish best-practice processes, drive modern engineering approaches and help deliver data solutions that support smarter, more effective decision-making across the organisation. 

Technical Responsibilities

• Lead the design, implementation and operation of enterprise database and data platforms across cloud and on-premises environments. 
• Ensure the availability, performance, security and reliability of production database services. 
• Establish and maintain technical standards, best practices and operational processes. 
• Drive automation, DevOps and modern engineering practices to improve efficiency and service delivery. 
• Plan workloads, projects and resources to support operational and strategic priorities. 
• Contribute to technology roadmaps and align database initiatives with broader organisational objectives.  

People and Leadership Responsibilities

• Lead, coach and develop the Database Engineering team to deliver high-quality outcomes. 
• Set clear goals, KPIs and development plans, while supporting effective performance management. 
• Recruit, develop and retain talent in partnership with People and Culture. 
• Build a collaborative, inclusive and high-performing team culture. 
• Manage the departmental budget where applicable. 
• Promote a culture of continuous improvement, accountability and knowledge sharing.  

• We’re looking for an experienced database or data engineering leader who can combine technical expertise with strong people leadership and commercial awareness. You’ll bring:
• A tertiary qualification in Computer Engineering, Information Technology or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience. 
• At least eight years’ experience in data or database engineering, including five or more years in a leadership or mentoring capacity. 
• Proven experience leading, coaching and developing high-performing database or data engineering teams. 
• Strong capability in setting direction, defining priorities and aligning team outcomes with business objectives. 
• The ability to influence stakeholders and collaborate effectively across technology and business teams.
• Deep expertise in data engineering principles, ETL/ELT processes and enterprise data solution design.
• Extensive experience with enterprise data platforms, including on-premises databases and cloud data warehouses.
• Strong planning, prioritisation and time management skills in a fast-paced environment.
• Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail and clear written and verbal communication.
